Thank goodness for spring!
Tis the season for freshness, bright sunshine, and warm winds in Metro DC. A sudden boost of springtime energy might inspire you to declutter your home and make some seasonal changes.
Although we welcome the long-awaited sunshine, spring tends to shine a light on the more unflattering aspects of your home.
Particularly if you’re planning to sell your DC home this season, give in to spring fever and make sure your home is in fighting shape for the brighter days to come.
Exterior Home Maintenance Tips
Depending on your property type, a maintenance check of your home’s exterior might be very simple or quite involved. Before you plan the first barbecue of the season, make sure the following items are ticked off your list:
Examine Roof Shingles & Gutters
Roof shingles often suffer during the cold winter months, becoming lost or damaged. Any shingles that are cracked or loose will need replacing to prevent leakage.
Speaking of leakage - don’t forget the gutters!
Improper gutter drainage can quite easily lead to leaks in your basement or crawl space. It’s crucial to get these areas checked by a professional, or make sure downspouts drain away from your home’s foundation and clear any built-up debris.
Repair Cracked Concrete
Check any concrete slabs on your property for movement, and fill all cracks with concrete crack filler or silicone caulk. Take advantage of the brighter weather and power-wash the concrete before sealing it.
Service the AC Unit
An annual AC service and coil cleaning will ensure your air conditioning unit is fit for optimal performance in the warmer months of the year. As the seasons progress, it’s important to check and change interior filters as needed.
Regardless of your home type, there’s always room for interior changes to freshen up your space.
The warmer weather in DC often gives us a boost of energy to declutter. Especially if you’re planning to sell your DC home this season, lean in to the feeling and cross those cleaning tasks off your to-do list.
Dust off those neglected ceiling fans, window casings, and cabinets that you’ve been avoiding. Do all you can to reduce and remove dust, mites, and other allergens - you’ll be doing a favor for both your body and your mind.
Going through clothing, disorganized drawers, and closets to determine what’s no longer needed is another great way to refresh your home and save space. Donate any unwanted items to charity or sell them online.
Inspect Your Attic
If you’re selling your DC home in the near future, it’s crucial to do to a room-by-room maintenance check of your home for leakage and other issues that may arise. The attic is a common favorite for mice and insects, especially in the winter, so be vigilant!
Check Your Smoke Detector
The change of seasons is an excellent time to make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly. Change batteries if needed, and regularly dust all the detectors in your home.
While you’re at it, check your fire extinguishers to make sure the pins are in place and no leakage is presented.
Even the smallest checks and changes to your home can make a monumental difference - not only when it comes to your home’s aesthetics, but also you and your family’s health. Make some time for your DC home this spring - you won’t regret it!
